People Transformation: The Path to Turn Down the Downturn Professor Dave Ulrich 23-25 February 2010
DAY I : Tuesday 23 February 2010
A s companies emerge from the recession, they will need to build stronger employee engagement by ensuring that employees are competent, committed, and contributing. Professor Ulrich has helped shape thinking on how to transform HR practices so that they are aligned to customer needs and integrated around organization capabilities to build this employee engagement. This workshop will address the changing business conditions and the implications for managing individual ability, organization capability, and leadership. The required organization capabilities of the future and what leaders should know and do to respond to future business realities will be highlighted. It will end with implications for the changing role of human resource professionals and competencies they must demonstrate to be successful. The participants will be able to utilize the learning and practice of this workshop to transform their HR departments. The workshop will be divided into seven modules as outlined in the detail agenda below.
DAY II : Tuesday 24 February 2010

Module 4 - HR transformation phase 1: Business context & HR transformation phase 2: Outcomes The first two phases of an HR transformation will be discussed in this session. Professor Ulrich will start with an environmental analysis to determine the major drivers for HR transformation. This might include demographics, economic conditions, political and social conditions, and globalization; then, looking at specific business conditions in Thailand that impact HR. Second, he will examine the outcomes of the HR transformation. By defining HR outcomes, HR professionals can build the capabilities an organization requires to meet strategic goals. The practical organizational diagnostic tool to help HR professionals define the required capabilities an organization will be shared. Lastly, Professor Ulrich will outline the key capabilities and how HR can define and deliver these capabilities as the outcomes of their work. |

Module 5 - HR transformation phase 3: HR structure and HR practices Professor Ulrich will continue with the next phase of HR transformation by exploring how to organization an HR function and how to upgrade HR practices. For the HR function, how to craft a mission or vision strategy for the HR function will be shared and the choices about organizing the HR function will be defined. This will include a discussion of HR generalists, HR specialists in centers of expertise, HR IT, and corporate HR roles. For the HR practices, Professor Ulrich will outline how to align, integrate, and innovate HR practices around people, performance, communication, and work. |

Module 6 - HR transformation Phase 4: HR competencies Based from over 10,000 respondents worldwide on competencies for successful HR, Professor Ulrich's research has identified six domains critical to a successful HR professional. He will report the data and identify specific practices HR professionals must master in each domain. |

Module 7 - HR transformation phase 5: Accountability Professor Ulrich will end the workshop with helping participants building an action plan for their HR function and for themselves. This action plan will help the HR professionals know how to turn the ideas from the workshop into practice. |

Leadership Code: Cracking Great Leadership into Everyday Action Professor Dave Ulrich
What makes a great leader? It’s a question that has been tackled by thousands. Where are the clear, simple answers we need for our daily work lives? Are there any?
Drawing on decades of research experience, Professor Ulrich and colleagues conducted extensive interviews with a variety of respected CEOs, academics, experienced executives, and seasoned consultants and heard the same five essentials repeated again and again. These five rules became The Leadership Code.
In this workshop, Professor Ulrich will break down great leadership into day-to-day actions and take your leadership to the next level. Participants from this work will gain understanding on be better leaders by identifying what they can personally do to improve their quality of leadership and build better leadership in their organizations. The content of this workshop will be framed into four questions as described in the agenda below.

Question 1: Why leadership matters? In this session, the importance of the leadership quality for employee, customer, investor, and community results will be discussed. In addition, the methodology in tracking the important and quality of leadership will be detailed. |

Question 2: What is new in leadership thinking? The two significant trends in leadership thinking outlined below will be shared in this session: [1] Shifting focus from the individual leader to Leadership - while individual leaders are important, the quality of leadership they build in the company is often more important. [2] Shifting focus from inside to outside - focusing less on what leaders to and more on what they deliver.

Question 3: What is the leadership code and how do leaders master it? This session will highlight the importance of leaders mastering the leadership basics. The overall leadership code will be reviewed. Follow by the discussion on how it is based on predispositions. Lastly, Professor Ulrich will highlight the importance of 5 domains where leaders must excel. Both ideas and tools for each of the five domains that people can use to make a difference will be discussed. [1] Strategist: leaders have to be excellent at setting strategies in place that position the firm for the future [2] Executor: leaders have to be excellent at getting things done [3] Talent management: leaders have to be excellent at working with people and making sure they can do their work |

Question 3: What is the leadership code and how do leaders master it? (Continued) Question 4: What is leadership brand and how do we deliver it This session will continue the leadership code, by focusing on three additional areas where leaders must excel: [4] Human capital development: leaders must invest in the next generation of employees [5] Personal proficiency: leaders must have the personal character and qualities that enable them to lead. In addition to doing the basics well, leader must align their work inside their company with expectations of customers outside their company. This builds the leadership brand, or differentiators for what makes leaders successful over time. Professor Ulrich will outline the six steps of building leadership brand and how to apply those to the participant’s company. |

Closing Keynote This last session intends to summarize the themes of the conference and discuss on future implications for the HR profession in Thailand.
